People often ask, “Where are you from?”
And I always pause.
What are they really asking? Do they want to know where I just came from? Or where I just moved my stuff from? Should I tell them where most of my stuff still is, even though the answer is different from where I am currently?
Or do they mean where I’m from originally? Which is not necessarily where I was born or lived until the age of 9, but it is where I consider myself to be from.
Or should we limit the discussion to just the places I’ve lived with my husband, which involves moving 7 times in the past 7 years. Eight, if you count that time we lived with my sister-in-law for 6 weeks, but Mr. F refuses to count it as “a move”. It seems these are the types of things only gypsies argue about.
Of course, that’s just what I’m thinking. I wouldn’t actually say all of that.
That would just be embarrassing.
